This is an update to our earlier post on how the law change on cookies use affects your website. Please read our earlier article for background information on this topic.
The original information provided by the ICO on how the EU law on website cookie usage would affect UK website owners was sufficiently vague as to what the actual requirements were – this led to many websites suddenly introducing large popup notifications regarding cookie use and/or removing otherwise useful tools from their websites (such as Google Analytics).
The good news is that they have now provided further clarification on the topic …
To summarise…
Unless your website sets cookies which collect detailed personal information from your website visitors then all you need to do is update your Privacy Policy with information that clearly states that your website uses cookies.
So use of cookies to enable your site to use Google Analytics, social media sharing buttons and for your ecommerce solution to work do NOT require any unsightly / user unfriendly additions to your website.
*Huge sigh of relief from all website owners*
